Why is healthy food still a privilege? Food is not an ordinary commodity, and yet access to healthy, adequate, fairly produced and sufficient food remains a denied reality for millions of people in the world, including in Europe. It depends on where you live and how much you earn, while the people who grow it are often the ones who struggle most.
Next Saturday we gather for the usual ARCI apéro to talk about the right to adequate food and how States have the obligation to create the conditions for everyone to access adequate, healthy and culturally appropriate food at any time, and to make sure that it is produced sustainably and respecting workers’ rights.
We will learn from actors who are already building equitable and sustainable food systems such as @la_via_campesina_official and @impacte_slowfood_community_ , creating a space to discuss convergence across challenges, struggles and solutions about the structural injustices that permeate the food system, and how climate change is reshaping what ends up on our plates. We’ll present the European Citizens’ Initiative “Food is a Human Right for All!” and you can sign it on the spot. The ECI is an opportunity to talk about food as a political issue, not a matter of charity or market dynamics - one million signatures can put the right to food on the EU’s agenda. ✍️
As usual, spritz and birrette as of 18:30. This time, the ingredients for the apero food will be directly provided by farmers working in the proximity of Brussels. 🥔 🥬🧅
